Hair Restoration Tips Buyers Need to Know
Review the full price, not only the advertised graft fee. The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery’s 2023 Practice Census reports that surgical hair restoration often costs several thousand dollars, with major regional variation. Ask whether consultation, laboratory tests, medication, aftercare, and revision planning are included.
Financing can reduce monthly pressure, but calculate the total repayment, interest, missed-payment fees, and cancellation terms. “Low monthly payment” can hide a costly contract. A written quote matters.
Risks deserve equal attention. Temporary shedding, swelling, infection, scarring, numbness, and an unnatural hairline are possible. Donor hair is limited. A careless design may become difficult to correct later.
Request the clinician’s credentials, surgical role, before-and-after cases, and complication policy. The American Academy of Dermatology estimates that hereditary hair loss affects about 80 million people in the United States, yet not every buyer needs surgery. A medical diagnosis should come before payment. Some causes may improve with non-surgical treatment.
Expected outcomes are gradual. New growth commonly appears around three to six months, while fuller results may require twelve to eighteen months. Results vary with age, hair characteristics, healing, ongoing loss, and available donor density.
Do not trust guaranteed growth claims. A 2022 ISHRS Practice Census found that FUE was widely used, but technique popularity does not prove suitability for every patient.
I would also question dramatic photographs: lighting, hair length, camera angle, and styling can change the apparent density. Ask for consistent photographs and a realistic estimate, not perfection.
